In humans nitric oxide is a signaling molecule in many physiological and pathological processes. It was proclaimed the "Molecule of the Year" in 1992. The 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for discovering nitric oxide's role as a cardiovascular signalling molecule. (Wikipedia)

Nitric oxide (NO) gas works by widening blood vessels in the lungs that become constricted as a result of inflammation and formation of clots and can no longer provide the body with enough oxygen. The gas is frequently used as a first line treatment in premature babies and for oxygen-deprived newborn babies. Preliminary data suggests that inhaled NO could have a virus-killing effect on SARS-CoV-2 due to the genomic similarities between this virus and those that caused the SARS and MERS outbreaks. Testing a unique form of inhaled nitric oxide as a treatment for COVID-19 is one of the crucial clinical trials springing up across The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine showing promise for improved outcomes in the worldwide effort to control the spread and recurrence of this deadly disease. The first of its kind in Ohio, the study tests the use of a novel inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) treatment on humans with the aim of reducing the need for mechanical ventilation, while fighting the virus and improving recovery time.
This iNO treatment has been used safely and effectively as a therapy for improving oxygen exchange in the treatment of lung disease. It has been found to improve breathing in patients affected by the SARS virus in earlier outbreaks.
Prior studies of SARS-CoV revealed that inhaled nitric oxide's antiviral properties could suppress how the virus replicates, showing potential as an antiviral agent that could possibly decrease disease burden. Based on the genetic similarities between the two coronaviruses, the historical data supports the potential for inhaled nitric oxide to provide meaningful benefit for patients infected with COVID-19.(Ohio State University)

Nitric Oxide has many properties -- it's produced by cells that line our blood vessels to helps control blood pressure and open the airways in the lung, allowing more oxygen to be absorbed. But researchers have also found nitric oxide has a antibacterial and antiviral effect.

One of the studies suggesting it may have potential as a tool against COVID-19 is a report by Dr. Roham Zamanian, a pulmonologist at Stanford Health Care in California. His team gave nitric oxide to a woman suffering from pulmonary arterial hypertension who had also developed COVID-19.
"We were able to document that she was feeling better and better as we provided her with the nitric oxide, until day 15, 16 where we want to begin to wean the medication off."

"There's every reason to believe that the nitric oxide will work in the present coronavirus situation," American pharmacologist Lou Ignarro told CTV News.
